Trace who held a US federal judgeship (Article III seat) before and after a judge, from the Federal Judicial Center biographical directory. Give a judge name (or an FJC Seat ID) and get the whole chain of holders of that seat in order, each with appointing president, commission date and how service ended, plus the named predecessor and successor of the judge asked about. Answers “who did Judge X replace”, “who succeeded Justice Y”, “who has held this seat”.

Parameters

Name	Type	Required	Description
`name`	string	no	Judge name, full or partial, e.g. “John G. Roberts”, “Millett”. Add court if the surname is common.
`seat_id`	string	no	FJC Seat ID of any holder of the seat, e.g. “CADC0607” (returned by fjc_judge_lookup). Alternative to name.
`court`	string	no	Optional court fragment selecting which of a judge’s appointments to trace, e.g. “District of Columbia Circuit”.
